2011-2012
On October 5th, 2011, OxfamUO hosted a movie night in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Centre of the SFUO.
The movie we showed was “The Future of Food“, a movie that offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade.
On October 16th, 2011, OxfamUO celebrated World Food Day with the support of Equal Voice uOttawa with a speaker’s panel who discussed Oxfam’s current GROW campaign.
Speakers included (a) Lucy Sharratt, coordinator of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN), (b) Leah Stuart-Sheppard, the Canadian delegate at the 2010 G(irls)20 Summit, and (c) Courtney-Anne Craft, a long-time intern at Oxfam Canada.
We raised $150 for Oxfam Canada! Thank you to Equal Voice uOttawa, our executive team, and all the volunteers who helped make this event amazing!
Special thank you also goes to Credible Edibles, who catered the event. Check out pictures from the event here.
From October 15-22, 2011, people around the world took part in Oxfam’s GROW Week. GROW Week is an annual celebration of food and the people who produce it – and a call for changes to fix the injustices in our food system, that leave almost a billion of us going to bed hungry every night, the majority women and girls.
GROW week this year included the 30th anniversary of World Food Day on October 16, when people in dozens of countries took action on global food issues. To celebrate this week, OxfamUO, along with campuses across Canada, circulated a survey around the University of Ottawa campus to find out if students were interested in having more organic, and sustainable food available on campus.

On November 25th, 2011, the International Students from the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) at the University of Ottawa teamed up with OxfamUO to hold a fundraising event for the crisis in Somalia.
The international students organized a day of gifts, games, food, and activities, and thanks to their hard work, we raised $825.21 for Oxfam Canada’s initiatives in the Horn of Africa!
On December 1st, 2011, OxfamUO commemorated World AIDS Day by organizing a speaker’s panel in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Health Services Health Promotion team. The theme was Global to Local: Uniting Perspectives on HIV/AIDS. Panelists included (a) Frédérique Chabot, from the AIDS Committee of Ottawa, (b) Jean-François Martinbault, from the Oasis program at the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, (c) Louise de la Gorgendière, from Carleton University, and (d) Vicky Schreiber, from Oxfam’s Southern Africa program.
The goals of the evening were to engage students, raise awareness around HIV, and demonstrate how HIV is a united battle. While there are communities and regions more vulnerable to the virus than others, HIV is not an isolated issue. HIV affects all people, in all communities, in all countries, in all regions. HIV programs and initiatives may vary region to region, but the end visions of greater health and lower infection rates remain the same.

- Stand Up Take Action- End Poverty Now!
This semester, we participated in Stand Up Take Action – End Poverty Now! on October 16th, 2009. Ottawa was one of many cities across the world to demand that world leaders end poverty and achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. Our campus group teamed up with the Art of Living Foundation to make posters for the event, and met up again on the Hill. The president of our campus club was even invited to MC for the event, and Paul Dewar took time out of his day to speak on the subject, along with a number of organizations across the National Capital Region.

- Our “stunt” for the day!
Our second major event so far was “Fill the Hill Day of Action”. It was a rainy and cold day, but we managed to have some fun while getting the message of the importance of climate change across.
